Idea and origin of Earth Day

Earth Day originated in the USA in 1970 as a spontaneous student movement. The aim at that time was to draw attention to the environmental movement in the form of a demonstration and to show that not only industry has a strong lobby, but also nature!

Since then, Earth Day has been celebrated worldwide on April 22 and is often closely linked to national environmental policy.

Earth Day in Germany

The Earth Day International Deutsche Komitee e.V. has been in existence since 1994 with the main objective of expanding Agenda 21, which was adopted at the UN Environment Summit in Rio in 1992, with guidelines for sustainable development in the 21st century.

The call to the German people is:

"Do something for the Earth, be environmentally fit and demonstrate your concern on Earth Day."

It's up to each and every one of us! This fits well with our mission at 2zero, because we also want everyone to live greener, that everyone can participate, that everyone becomes aware of environmentally relevant issues and questions their own behavior, because green is life! - Without the raised forefinger, but with positivity and inspiration, true to the motto: "How can I change something in my environment - privately or professionally?"

The German Earth Day initiative calls for:

Each year, Earth Day focuses on a different theme to steer toward a sustainable future. This year's theme is:

"Invest in Our Planet."

The following subtopics are focused on:

Build Our only Home

We have the power and the responsibility to raise our voices and protect our only home! Every action we take has a massive impact on our environment and influences the actions of companies and governments. Gen Z is setting a good example for us by 45% of them stopping buying from brands with poor ethics and sustainability. Through citizen:inside action and our daily choices, we can advocate for green practices and climate-friendly investments. There is no time to waste, let's invest in our planet!

Build a healthy economy

Sustainability is the path to prosperity for humanity and businesses. Companies with strong ESG standards have better profitability, financial performance and happier employees. There is no choice between going green or making long-term profits. It is critical that companies of all sizes act now. Otherwise, climate change will cause even more catastrophic damage to our economies.

Build an Equitable Future

Money makes the world go round, even when it comes to climate change. Governments have the power to transform our economy by promoting green business practices as an ethical and profitable option. Clean energy jobs provide income +25% of the national median wage, so it's high time to promote this sector! The fossil fuel industry makes over $5.9 trillion annually (and counting). It's time to raise our voices and get our gov'ts to start the sustainability revolution NOW! Let's build our future!
